forthcoming 16th July
Blawan, Addison Groove, Indigo
Next up on cultured Hypercolour off-shoot, Hype LTD, is Indigo – a low key producer who goes by the name of Liam Blackburn. A recent addition to the nu-skool R&S artist roster, and since 2008 the producer has popped up on labels like DBridge’s Exit Records, his own Mindset, OpenEarz and Brownswood as well as remixing artists including Illum Sphere for dubstep originators Tectonic. His sound is dark and stripped back, and here the producer serves up the most techno leaning HypeLTD offering yet.
Across three tracks he explores desolate landscapes thick with hiss and static, abstract analogue noises and otherworldly ambiances whilst never straying too far from a heavy dancefloor pulse.
First track “Wake” is a clattering, kinetic percussive workout married to heavy kick drums and deliciously scraping sounds that bristles and brims with a muscular charm from start to finish as a heavily doom laden breakdown mid way through adds only more tension.
Aradia” is more stripped back and cerebral but features just the same great sound design in its every little nook and cranny. When the rhythm coalesces proper it’s a smooth, dead of night drive into the eeriest and bleakest yet somehow most inviting and warm of techno towns.
Closer “Kali” straddles a line between the linear techno of Shifted and the more atmospheric offerings of someone like Kontext, closing out the three tracker with a pensive sense of purpose if ever you did hear one: serious business from start to finish.
